For a boater, its pretty important to know which way is north. But with the pole drift speed increasing from 10 miles a year to nearly 35 miles a year, scientists are scrambling to keep everything from Google Maps to GPS software updated on the changes. The earth’s core is liquid iron that is spinning and flowing, and these interactions create magnetic fields that humans have used for navigation throughout most of our history. Scientists normally update the World Magnetic Model every 5 years with the last one in 2015. But with the increase of speed they were forced to make an unprecedented update in 2019.
Rest assured though, Earth scientists are monitoring the drift, so go ahead and untie those dock lines.
